How SuperFetch speeds up your PC
The official description of the SuperFetch service says it “maintains and improves system performance over time,” but that is vague and doesn’t quite explain the story.
SuperFetch is a feature that was introduced in Windows Vista. It stays quietly in the background, constantly analyzing RAM usage patterns and finding out what types of apps you use most often. Over time, SuperFetch marks these applications as “frequently used” and preloads them into RAM in advance.
The idea is that when you want to launch the app, it will start much faster because it is already preloaded in memory.
By default, SuperFetch is designed to take up all remaining RAM space with preloaded applications. But don’t worry as this is only for unused memory. As soon as your system needs more RAM (perhaps to load an application that has not been preloaded), it gives up the necessary memory.
Note that SuperFetch is not the same as Prefetch, which is the preload memory manager that was introduced in Windows XP. In fact, SuperFetch is the successor to Prefetch. The difference is that Prefetch hasn’t analyzed usage patterns over time and adjusted its preload settings accordingly.
Is SuperFetch really necessary?
For the most part, SuperFetch is useful. If you have a modern PC with at least average specs, SuperFetch performs great and you will never notice it. There’s a good chance SuperFetch is running on your system and you didn’t even know it, right?
But there are a few “problems” that can arise with SuperFetch:
- Because SuperFetch is always running in the background, the SuperFetch service itself always uses CPU and RAM.
- SuperFetch doesn’t eliminate the need to load apps into RAM; it just shifts the load earlier. Each time this load occurs, your system will experience the same slowdown as if you launched the application without SuperFetch.
- System startup can be slow because SuperFetch preloads a packet of data from your hard drive to RAM. If your hard drive works at 100% for a few minutes every time you start or restart your computer, SuperFetch could be the culprit.

SuperFetch has also been known to cause performance issues while gaming, especially on systems that have 4GB of RAM or less. It’s unclear why this happens because it doesn’t happen for everyone, but we suspect that these are RAM-heavy games that constantly demand and release memory, which can cause loading and continuous data unloading.
Is it safe to disable SuperFetch?
Yes! There is no risk of side effects if you decide to turn it off. Our recommendation is that if your system is working fine, leave it. If you are having issues with high hard drive usage, high RAM usage, or degraded performance during high RAM load activities, try turning it off and see if that helps. If so, keep it. If not, turn it back on.
